How to Make Your Hairstyle Last in Humidity.
One of the things I love about Mindy Kaling is how real she is. And, while I know a lot of the tips are easily accessible in magazines and on Pinterest, in her book Why Not Me? she really lays out all of the things celebrities do to look great. And it’s not that they all are naturally stunning, there are every day things (some affordable and some not-so-much) that people can do for great hair and great skin and great outfits. This was the first thing I thought of at the end of last summer when I got tired of having my hairstyles look terrible basically right after I left the house.
On a good day, my curls just fell quickly. On a particularly humid day, my curls fell and/or turned into a cloud. There is nothing like having on a really cute outfit and walking past your reflection and seeing that your hair is an absolute mess. So I figured things out. Through some trial and error, these five tips have been foolproof in keeping my hair perfect even on
Note: I just want to start off letting you know these tips will work for anyone with curly or frizzy hair or who just wants their style to hold better in the humidity of the summer.
1. Maintain the Health of your Hair
People will tell you that layers are the way to go. The truth is, nothing will help you if you have split ends and half of the strands are fried. Maintain your haircut schedule. If it has been a while, you may even need to get quite a few inches cut off to start, but it will be worth it. You also do not need super high heat settings. In fact
2. Use a Flat-Iron
If you are skeptical of tip number one, then make sure to style your hair with something that uses heat on both sides. This means that every strand is actually in contact with the heat-source. So you can get away with less heat.
3. Let it Set
If you are curling your hair, make sure not to brush through your hair before it cools. Invest in a set of duck clips to pin each curl individually for about minutes after you finish the last section. If you don’t have time, give it a cool blast with the blow dryer for a couple of minutes. Carefully.
4. Hairspray
For curling: While a few spritzes at the end don’t hurt, spray each section before curling. Just don’t saturate the hair.
For straight hair: Use a tiny bit of hair spray before straightening. On areas where you have flyaways spritz a tiny amount on a boar head bristle brush and lightly brush over those areas.
5. Brazilian Blowout
This is what seals the deal. Pun intended. This will seal your hair with keratin and keep the moisture out. It’s a little pricey, but it is possible to do at home. The process is about as simple as dyeing your hair yourself. Just make sure that wherever you go or whatever you buy is the newest version without formaldehide.
