72 Hours in Austin: Day Three

My favorite part about visiting a friend, no matter where it is, is that it takes me back to the days of middle school sleepovers. (Before my twenties are over, I’ve promised myself that I will have a sleepover themed birthday.) Waking up late in the morning for day three in Austin was so nice. I was running on empty a bit right up until then. I was looking forward to a relaxed day.

Brunch at 11:00 a.m was at Grizzelda’s, a relatively new Tex-Mex spot. You go because the pictures look so instagrammable and you stay because the food is genuinely that awesome. I really liked the mix of styles in the space. The space is overall rustic and a bit minimal with a few lux pieces thrown in. It came together for a surprisingly cohesive look. It’s buffet style which is great, because what’s better than not having to choose? Nothing.

The standout dishes for me were the queso (because queso is always my favorite) and the spiced pancakes with a dulce de leche sauce. Those pancakes were a game changer. They are so special that they could be Christmas morning or staycation Saturday pancakes. Figuring out how to make them is definitely on my to-do list.

Based on a recommendation from Michael (the best waiter ever), I had a Grizz Mizz margarita. It was perfection. Not only was my drink a beautiful hot pink, it was also exactly the way a margarita should be. The lime to tequila ratio was on point.

After resting for a while after brunch, it will not be a shock that we went for more food. This time there were popsicles. Steel City Pops is very new in Austin, but I have (another) best friend who loves their popsicles and has taken me to a Ft. Worth location. There was no way I could be in the same city as one and not stop by. They have so many topping options, which is surprising for a popsicle place. I had a pomegranate popsicle with white chocolate drizzle. So tasty. The best part is that you can stock up, taking some home in their freezer bags.

Would it be a girls’ weekend without more shopping? We stopped into a store where we knew it would one-hundred percent browsing. I thought I was obsessed with the Chloe Nile bag before and now I’m sure that I am. I had never actually held one and tried it on and the moment I had it hanging from my wrist it moved up several spots on my wish list.

The one store where I actually did buy something was Paper Source of all places. I’m currently on the hunt for good coffee table books and I have pretty specific criteria. I’m wanting books that you can actually read and that are visually interesting inside and out. This one was perfect. It tells the stories of a diverse group of women, curated specifically for both their business and creative acumen.

In the evening we made our way back to ACL to catch The Killers. Brandon Flowers was such a great performer. He genuinely looked like he was living his best life on that stage. The crowd was electric. It was a total turnaround from night one.

On our way back home we stopped at Coat & Thai in The Picnic food truck park. My best friend and I share a mutual appreciation for Thai. As in an “I have a semi-weekly schedule and I will not miss it,” appreciation for me and an “if I haven’t had it this week something is wrong,” kind of appreciation for her. So we ended the night with Thai food and Hocus Pocus. Classic sleepover, right? We only made it through the first thirty minutes before bedtime, because we’re grandmas at heart.
