Life

Sunday Best |6.7.20

I honestly can’t believe it’s Sunday again. Like many people, I have spent this week consuming so many articles and so much media relating to black lives and social justice. I thought I would share a few that resonated with me.

  • I know we’re all trying to read more and this is a list of books about black lives.
  • This article from The Atlantic really resonated with me and how strict my mom was. It was never about how I would act but about how other people may treat me or react. And now I can’t imagine raising my future kids any other way.
  • National Geographic did a really powerful piece this week on the timeline of lynching that makes it clear how it is happening today.
  • #PublishingPaidMe – This took off on twitter and highlights the disparities between what black authors get paid for their book advances versus what white authors get paid.

While it has been a pretty contemplative week for me, I also stopped to appreciate some moments of joy generally brought by TV and food. What else do we have right now?

  • Last week’s episode of Insecure (Low Key Happy) was the one I have been waiting on for ages. But with Insecure, they could still screw things up in the two episodes left this season. (NOTE: Great show with a black cast for twenty- and thirty-somethings.)
  • Queer Eye dropped a new season on Netflix and I am really into Karamo’s t-shirt activism.
  • Tyler Candle Store – My best friend gave me a candle from here and it took me a while to give it a try. A few weeks later my mom also gave me a candle from here. They are a new favorite. The scents are subtle but strong. I’ve been burning Diva and Original.
  • Magnolia Table – I have been making the Bacon Drip Jam and the Herb Mayo from Joanna Gaines’ cookbook and they make even simple recipes great. The Bacon jam has gone on sandwiches and topped polenta bowls for me this week.
